Living Mirrors

But the storm is blowing in from Paradise:

Suffering is a mirror held out by an angel—one must know how to read it, then.

(Vincent La Soudière)

Hope has been faithful to me, as has panic in the river of pleasure.

 (Borges)

The idea is a monad—that means briefly: every idea contains the image of the world.

(Walter Benjamin)

“Living Mirrors” is the third part of the trilogy "But a storm is blowing in from Paradise", which is convulsed by the conflicts that scorch the seams and scars of the ruined world we inhabit.  Being deeply imbued with the hopes and despair of Walter Benjamin’s philosophy, starting from his Angel, the project  simultaneously opens onto reflections about the cosmological impulses and impetus behind the forces that may fuel history.

“Living Mirrors” grows from the same seeds as the previous two — Desert Island and Dust Devils — namely, war in Ukraine, war as such, and an attempt at a specular alchemy as a reflective transformation through the sonic manifestation of electrical discharges.

Recorded through a few improvisational acousmatic sessions, using voltage fluctuations as its sole sound source, this work unfolds through a series of erratic sonic events as unevenly woven domains, spinning themselves from strains, rifts, cracks, and ruptures.

The name is derived from Leibniz's monadology, where he described monads as “windowless” yet interconnected substances whose relations to the whole express all that exists in the universe. Captivated by the richness of the image, Benjamin appropriated the system without following it, presenting monads rather as fragile fractures, historically localised and marked by incompleteness and the pressure of unrealized extreme potentials, while remaining within their configurations as isolated singulars.

Springing from this line of thought, this work inverts the very logic of stasis implied in both representations, unfurling monads rather as essentially processual zones — zones of transits.

Within this album, all tracks act as such monads, defined by the “passing condition” that constitutes them. Here, Living mirrors appear as fluxions, vortexes, the seething in time’s cauldron, or thresholds seen as spaces for transmutation.

Living mirrors, thus, manifest themselves as mirrors of becoming.

Appearing as a spontaneous journey through voltage spikes, this album presents, in its essence, a play of aspirations and mourning. Traversing the liminal and the arcane, and blazing trails between grief and hope, lamentations and longing, “Living Mirrors” is opening onto events that could come to pass but have never happened.
