Snezhana Reizen

Maya Pennington & Snezhana Reizen are a duo of sonic adventurers—“sounders of the depths” dancing on the borders of the discovered and the imagined.
In their improvisational sessions, they mingle experimental electroacoustics with post-industrial, jazz with ambient, noise with voice, and a sob with a splash, sonically embodying elements and phenomena from the natural world—all forms of void and matter.
With her background in jazz vocal performance and piano, Maya combines complex vocal and sonic techniques with object manipulations and a sampler, acting as a sonic psychopomp. Her deep, incantatory voice opens a passage into a subterranean realm where language begins to dissolve into sensation.
Alongside this, Snezhana generates an oneiric and endlessly shifting continuum of sonic becomings, weaving her atmospheres through electrical discharges, radio waves, feedback, and algorithms.
Working primarily with intensities and resonance, they create an unfurling horizon within the psyche, opening onto a fluid, evolving environment.
Rooted in poetic sensibility and blending a sense of wonder with scientific curiosity and philosophical depth, their sessions reveal hidden facets of life, inviting listeners to encounter profound truth and/or potency within fantasy (and vice versa). Through sound, they approach collective trauma, uncertainty, fear, grief, and hope in a unique unconventional manner, allowing these experiences to emerge as mutable, embodied, and shared.

Listen to a mixture made with fragments and fragrances of our improvisational set with Maya Pennington which took place 07.06.24 during a utopian breakup party.
it was quite ambivalent and chaotic event with a wind of some strangely charming beauty of endings (beginnings included)
Maya's presences flowed through her magic voice, flutes and objects.
my sound pallet was swerving around that and included sources such as processed noises appeared between unconnected wires, israeli radio, military helicopters and sound synthesis.

This is for example a dead bird
An exhibition by Yael Sady that explored a secret life of shadows and objects, featuring our performance with a singer, a pianist and an electronic musician Maya Pennington.
…
All objects of the exhibition are equipped with mechanisms, each moving in its own trajectory. The old tv-set shows “The birds” by Hitchcock. Among others there is one object that stands out - it is the construction of moving in a round plastic hand with a raised finger, on which sits a bird with its wings spread.
That which is suppressed will fight back, and it should be understood on various levels - from subconsciousness to that of politics.
One of our messages here can be read as follows : “no matter what happened art is always alive. “
Within our set with Maya we explored related themes by elaborating on polyphony and playing with distance. This was one in a series of our live sets. To see more, please visit a corresponding page.
Here's you can listen to a sonic miniature captured from this event, and a 6 min video-fragment of the performance
