AffectologY
Gałgał Rzeng Mikę iV
It is not true that there is a definite area of human consciousness,
within which there is clear discrimination and beyond which mere darkness. [. . .]
The basic fact is the rise of an affective tone originating from things whose relevance is given.
Alfred North Whitehead "Adventures of Ideas"
“Affectology” is an intermedia beat-disoriented project by sound artists Michał Krajczok
(GAŁGAŁ) and Snezhana Reizen (Rzeng) featuring visuals by Mike iV
The project explores phenomena of affects and affective involvement through various media in improvisational sessions.
Treating affects as movements of autonomic pre-subjective intensities that bring differences even in untimely events or categories such as atmosphere (affect is what the atmosphere provides) we attempt to create a dynamic "cartography of affects" with diverted images and disruptive pulses. Within this project, we elaborate on immeasurable beats and instability patterns, seeking abstract possibilities of/for each (next) moment.
In a drastically changing time of increasing complexity and unpredictability, we try to imagine a new creative form that would allow us to deal with the unknown and uncertainty.
A unique approach to the modular synth system allows Michał to create a dense canvas of pulses striving towards meta-stability through confusion and disintegration. Snezhana weaves an atmospheric, at times wrecking, non-layer into it through her procedural work with field recordings, radio waves, magnetic fields, electricity discharges, and environmental sounds from the performance space in real time.
The resulting canvas of sonic movements is linked to visuals through algorithms of sensitivity to the entire sonar spectrogram, synchronisation, and dis-synchronisation, creating a wide range of associations in the audience's perception but not in order to establish them rather to transform them, and in doing so to situate spectators in a non-place with high intensities, or in other words, to immerse the audience in a state of weightlessness and synesthetic rhymes.
"What is at stake here is an ontogenetic movement,
vectoring the creative force of time in “other” directions. [. . .]
Much can change on the fly. Intervening side-perceptions or micro-gestures,
or a previously unattended-to detail that suddenly pops out, can aggravate, deviate or flatten the feeling."
